Cumbia
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Cumbia comes from the Caribbean coast of Colombia, where African drums, indigenous flutes and Spanish song forms came together. In the 1940s and 1950s dance orchestras made popular music of it, with horns and accordion. Cumbia then spread across all of Latin America, with variants of its own in Mexico, Peru and Argentina.
Listening
Listening tip. In La Pollera Colorá, hear the calm, swaying rhythm with the scraping sound of the guacharaca and the horns.
