From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Los Ángeles Azules is a Mexican group that plays cumbia, the Mexican variant of that musical style. The name means the blue angels. The group came together in 1976 and began officially in 1980. It was formed by the siblings of the Mejía Avante family: Elías, Alfredo, José Hilario, Jorge, Cristina and Guadalupe.

Music and breakthrough

The group went through several periods of popularity. A big hit came in 1997 with Cómo te voy a olvidar. In 2013 it re-recorded many of its successes with guest singers such as Carla Morrison, Lila Downs and Ximena Sariñana. In 2014 it began with cumbia sinfónica, in which the hits were played with the Mexico City Symphony Orchestra. The album De plaza en plaza from 2016 contains collaborations with Gloria Trevi, Yuri, Natalia Lafourcade, Miguel Bosé and Ha*Ash. In 2018 Esto sí es cumbia appeared, made up entirely of covers.

Influence

In 2018 the group played at the Coachella festival, the first time a traditional cumbia group performed there. The music is made for dancing. In this way the family brought a popular dance style to festivals and concert halls.
