Chick Corea

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

The pianist Chick Corea, from the Boston area, grew up with the records of Bud Powell and Horace Silver. He played in Latin bands of Mongo Santamaría and Willie Bobo, which shaped his sense of rhythm. In 1968 he recorded the trio album Now He Sings, Now He Sobs and afterwards played electric piano with Miles Davis. In 1972 he founded Return to Forever, first with the singer Flora Purim and the percussionist Airto Moreira, later as a loud fusion band. Spain, based on the Concierto de Aranjuez, became a standard. Corea won more than twenty Grammys and also often played duets with the vibraphonist Gary Burton.
