Now He Sings, Now He Sobs

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Now He Sings, Now He Sobs · This second studio album by Chick Corea was released in December 1968 on Solid State Records. Corea plays in a trio with bassist Miroslav Vitouš and drummer Roy Haynes. All the pieces are improvisations on Corea's ideas, a few of them completely free, such as The Law of Falling and Catching Up. The title comes from the I Ching, a passage about the whole range of human experiences and emotions.

On release DownBeat gave the record zero stars, because the reviewer did not know what to make of it. Later the album grew into a piano trio classic. AllMusic sees in it the start of Corea's adventurous career, and the title track received a Grammy Hall of Fame Award in 1999.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Now He Sings, Now He Sobs and notice how bass and drums follow and challenge the piano, as if they were three equal voices.
