Tones for Joan's Bones
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Tones for Joan's Bones · This debut album by Chick Corea was recorded in 1966 and released in April 1968 on Vortex Records, a subsidiary of Atlantic. The quintet features saxophonist Joe Farrell, trumpeter Woody Shaw, bassist Steve Swallow and drummer Joe Chambers. Herbie Mann produced. Corea had already recorded with, among others, Mongo Santamaria and Cal Tjader, so he was no beginner.
Litha was later recorded by Stan Getz, and Blue Mitchell had recorded Tones for Joan's Bones and Straight Up and Down shortly before. DownBeat gave the record 4.5 stars and called it a real sleeper. AllMusic speaks of a solid, sophisticated hard bop record. The Penguin Guide calls the title piece a jazz classic.
