Straight Up

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Straight Up took nine months. First Badfinger recorded an entire record with producer Geoff Emerick, but Apple shelved it. George Harrison took over the work, until he became too busy with the Concert for Bangladesh, at which the group also played. Todd Rundgren then finished the album, in two weeks. The band found his way of working overbearing. Apple also steered the sound, which became less rocking than on earlier records.

Pete Ham wrote the hits Day After Day, Baby Blue and Name of the Game. On Day After Day, Harrison plays slide guitar in a duet with Ham. Critics were mixed when it appeared, but many now regard the album as the group's best. David Fricke of Rolling Stone called it the high point of their power pop.
