Bitches Brew
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Bitches Brew · After In a Silent Way, Miles Davis wanted to go even further with electric instruments. From 19 to 21 August 1969 he recorded in Studio B of Columbia in New York, with a large group: his regular band, supplemented by, among others, Joe Zawinul, John McLaughlin, Larry Young, Lenny White, Don Alias, Juma Santos and Bennie Maupin. He gave the musicians only a tempo, a few chords and a mood. The rest had to come out of improvisation.
Producer Teo Macero cut and spliced the recordings into long pieces, with tape loops and echo. Pharaoh's Dance contains nineteen edits; Miles Runs the Voodoo Down is the only one not edited. The rhythm section consisted of two bassists, two to three drummers and several electric pianos at once. The first reactions were mixed. The album won a Grammy in 1971 and is now regarded as a forerunner of jazz rock.
