Bennie Maupin
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Bennie Maupin from Detroit plays saxophones, flute and above all bass clarinet. His dark, shifting bass clarinet can be heard on Miles Davis's Bitches Brew (1970). He then played in Herbie Hancock's sextet and in his band the Headhunters, with whom he recorded Head Hunters in 1973. In 1974 he recorded The Jewel in the Lotus for ECM, a calm and spacious album that is almost the opposite of Hancock's funk. Maupin often works with small motifs and tonal colours rather than long solos.
Listening
