John McLaughlin

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

The guitarist John McLaughlin grew up in England and as a boy fell under the spell of Django Reinhardt; later John Coltrane and Miles Davis were his great models. After years in London groups he recorded Extrapolation in 1969 and left for New York, where he played with Tony Williams's Lifetime and on Miles Davis's In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew. In 1971 he founded the Mahavishnu Orchestra, with lightning-fast unisons, odd time signatures and loud rock sounds. In the 1970s he led Shakti, an acoustic group with Indian musicians. He has a spiritual interest in India that colours all of his music.
