Devotion

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Devotion is guitarist John McLaughlin's second album and was released in 1970. He recorded it while he was a member of Tony Williams Lifetime. His bandmate Larry Young plays organ, Buddy Miles, drummer of Jimi Hendrix's Band of Gypsys, sits behind the drums and Billy Rich, bassist of Taj Mahal, plays bass. He was not satisfied with the production by Alan Douglas, who mixed the recordings while he was not there.

According to The Rolling Stone Jazz Record Guide, this is where the guitarist comes closest to ordinary rock playing. Rolling Stone called the record very good and as heavy as a Led Zeppelin fan could wish for. AllMusic calls it one of the best acid rock albums ever and an exception in his catalogue.

Listening

Listening tip. In Devotion, the longest track, listen to McLaughlin's electric guitar and Larry Young's organ: how heavy and rock-like does this sound for a jazz guitarist?
