Tony Williams

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

The drummer Tony Williams grew up in Boston and as a boy studied the playing of Max Roach and Art Blakey. At seventeen, in 1963, he became the drummer of Miles Davis's second quintet. His playing was fast and mobile: he often did not spell out the beat, but let the cymbals and the hi-hat move freely around it. In 1969 he founded The Tony Williams Lifetime with the guitarist John McLaughlin and the organist Larry Young, one of the first fusion bands. Emergency! sounded loud and raw like rock music. Later he played acoustic jazz again. He died in 1997 after an operation.

Listening tip. Listen to the cymbals: a stream of ticks that pushes the band forward.
