Spring

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Spring is the second album by the drummer Tony Williams and was released in 1965 on Blue Note. It was recorded with two tenor saxophonists, Sam Rivers and Wayne Shorter, alongside pianist Herbie Hancock and bassist Gary Peacock. On the five tracks, all by Williams himself, not everyone plays on every piece. Hancock, for example, is absent from the first track, Extras.

Given the talent in the studio, expectations were high. The reviewer Al Campbell felt in AllMusic that it did not become a milestone. The album is not forgotten material, he wrote, but the compositions rarely managed to bring the musicians together into a true unity, which left the session somewhat sloppy.

Listening tip. Listen to Tee, the long closing track: notice how the two saxophonists and the drums interact with each other.
