The Joy of Flying
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Joy of Flying is a fusion album by the drummer Tony Williams, recorded at the end of his Lifetime years. It is regarded as his first solo record since 1966. The record contains three duets, two with Jan Hammer and one with the free-jazz pianist Cecil Taylor, and three different quartets. In one of them Herbie Hancock, Stanley Clarke and Tom Scott on Lyricon played, in another Ronnie Montrose, Brian Auger and Mario Cipollina. On Hip Skip a five-man horn section joins in.
Open Fire comes from a concert on 27 July 1978 in Japan. The Bay State Banner wrote that Williams wove contrasting styles such as rock and R&B into an electric fabric of shifting colours and moods. DownBeat gave four stars: according to the reviewer, Williams is at his best when he picks a side and lets all the rhythm boil.
