Jan Hammer was born in Prague in 1948 and studied at the music academy there. After the Warsaw Pact invasion in 1968 he left for the United States, where he received a scholarship to Berklee in Boston. From 1971 he played keyboards in guitarist John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra. He was one of the first to play the Minimoog live. From 1984 he wrote the music for the police series Miami Vice, for roughly ninety episodes, in his own studio on a farm in New York State.
