Life Time
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Life Time is the debut of the drummer Tony Williams as a bandleader. He recorded the album in August 1964 for Blue Note, over two days of sessions. He wrote all five tracks himself. He worked with saxophonist Sam Rivers, vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, pianist Herbie Hancock and three different bassists: Ron Carter, Gary Peacock and Richard Davis.
Besides drums, Williams also plays timpani, wood blocks, maracas and triangle. The music is unpredictable, and that keeps the listener engaged. The reviewer Scott Yanow called it, in AllMusic, a very strong debut by a masterly drummer. The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings included the record in a list of essential recordings that it calls a core collection.
