Ron Carter

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Ron Carter from Michigan first studied cello and classical double bass, but found that there was little room for a Black bassist in the orchestras of the time. He switched to jazz. From 1963 to 1968 he played in the second quintet of Miles Davis, with Herbie Hancock and Tony Williams. That rhythm section played freely and flexibly, and could change tempo and mood in the middle of a piece. Carter is the bassist who has played on the most jazz records; the Guinness Book of Records named him in 2015 the most recorded jazz bassist. In 1991 he played on The Low End Theory by A Tribe Called Quest.

Listening tip. Follow the bass: it holds the beat, but constantly changes direction.
