Uptown Conversation
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Uptown Conversation is the second album led by bassist Ron Carter, recorded in 1969 and first released on the label Embryo. Carter plays both electric bass and double bass. He has an unusual line-up around him: Hubert Laws on flute, Herbie Hancock on piano and electric piano, Sam Brown on guitar and the drummers Grady Tate and Billy Cobham.
The record contains seven pieces by Carter himself, with two alternate takes as a bonus on the CD reissue. Michael Nastos of AllMusic called it perhaps the most intriguing, challenging and impressive statement Carter has made as a leader. He considered it one of the most varied, intellectually stimulating and free records of his long career.
