Blues Farm

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Blues Farm is an album by bassist Ron Carter, recorded on 10 January 1973 at Van Gelder's studio in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, and released on the label CTI. Carter is not only the bassist but also the arranger and conductor of the session. He works with, among others, flautist Hubert Laws, the pianists Richard Tee and Bob James, drummer Billy Cobham and percussionist Ralph MacDonald.

Of the six pieces, five are by Carter himself. Django is a composition by John Lewis. The pieces run from just under three to well over eight minutes. The AllMusic reviewer found the excursions pleasant, but rather reserved. Both the compositions and the playing avoid strong emotions, he wrote, and opt for pleasant colours and textures.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Blues Farm and notice how the bass, the flute and the electric piano together create a mood, without any high emotion coming into play.
