Billy Cobham

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

The drummer Billy Cobham was born in Panama and grew up in New York. He played with Horace Silver and on albums by Miles Davis, such as Jack Johnson. In 1971 he became the drummer of John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra. Cobham played a large drum kit with two bass drums and many tom-toms, with enormous power and speed in odd time signatures. His first solo album Spectrum (1973), with the guitarist Tommy Bolin and the keyboard player Jan Hammer, became a model for fusion and rock drummers. The piece Stratus was later sampled a great deal. Cobham has long lived in Switzerland.
