The Inner Mounting Flame
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Inner Mounting Flame · Mahavishnu Orchestra was a five-piece group built around guitarist John McLaughlin that fused jazz and rock. After forming, the group first played a number of gigs before recording the debut album in August 1971. McLaughlin wrote all the tracks himself. The album was released later that year on Columbia, credited to the band and to the guitarist. The line-up also features Rick Laird on bass, Billy Cobham on drums, Jan Hammer on keyboards and Jerry Goodman on violin.
A JazzTimes reviewer heard classically inspired miniature suites in pieces such as Meeting of the Spirits and the acoustic A Lotus on Irish Streams. Awakening, driven by Cobham's blazing drums and the fierce, distorted guitar, appealed to rock audiences. Another reviewer called the album a wild, energetic meeting of virtuosos, which, a year after Bitches Brew, gave shape to the fusion of jazz and rock.
