Total Eclipse
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Total Eclipse is the third album by the fusion drummer Billy Cobham and was released in 1974. All eight tracks are his own. He plays drums, timpani and, on two tracks, acoustic piano. His band includes the guitarist John Abercrombie, the brothers Michael and Randy Brecker on wind instruments, the trombonist Glenn Ferris, the keyboardist Milcho Leviev and the bassist Alex Blake. Ken Scott recorded the record.
The music is fusion, a mixture of jazz and rock. The opening track Solarization lasts more than eleven minutes and consists of five parts. In between are short pieces such as Lunarputians and The Moon Ain't Made of Green Cheese, which lasts less than a minute. The longest track is Sea of Tranquility, almost eleven minutes. The album reached number 6 on the Billboard jazz chart, number 12 on the R&B chart and number 36 on the pop chart.
