Crosswinds

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Crosswinds was the second album by the fusion drummer Billy Cobham and was released in 1974. In contrast to the earlier Spectrum, it contains mainly tracks at a medium and slow tempo. All of the music is by the bandleader himself. He also took the photograph on the sleeve himself; it runs across the spine from front to back.

The first side is filled by Spanish Moss, A Sound Portrait, a suite in four parts: Spanish Moss, Savannah the Serene, Storm and Flash Flood. Each part has its own soloists, including Garnett Brown, George Duke, Randy Brecker and John Abercrombie. The second side holds The Pleasant Pheasant, Heather and Crosswind. Heather later became the basis for 93 'til Infinity by Souls of Mischief.

Listening

Listening tip. In Flash Flood, listen to the solos by Randy Brecker on trumpet and John Abercrombie on guitar.
