Django
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Django was released as a long-playing record in 1956, but the recordings date from June 1953, December 1954 and January 1955. Prestige first released them on two smaller records. The first session took place in New York, the later ones in Hackensack, New Jersey, with Rudy Van Gelder as recording engineer. The Modern Jazz Quartet consists of Milt Jackson on vibraphone, John Lewis on piano, Percy Heath on bass and Kenny Clarke on drums.
Lewis wrote Django in memory of guitarist Django Reinhardt, and Delaunay's Dilemma is a cheerful homage to the jazz critic Charles Delaunay. La Ronde Suite gives each band member space. AllMusic found the variety of styles and performances hard to surpass.
