Milt Jackson

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

The vibraphonist Milt Jackson, from Detroit, was brought to New York by Dizzy Gillespie in 1945 and played in his band and sextet. He made the vibraphone a bebop instrument. By slowing down the rotating discs in the resonator tubes, he gave his vibraphone a warm, singing vibrato. His nickname was 'Bags'. From 1952 to 1974, and again from 1981, he played in the Modern Jazz Quartet. There he brought blues and swing to counter John Lewis's strict forms. He also made many records with others, such as Bags' Groove with Miles Davis and Bags & Trane with John Coltrane.
