John Lewis

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

The pianist and composer John Lewis played in Dizzy Gillespie's big band in the late 1940s and co-wrote Birth of the Cool. In 1952 he founded the Modern Jazz Quartet with vibraphonist Milt Jackson, bassist Percy Heath and drummer Kenny Clarke; Connie Kay succeeded Clarke in 1955. Lewis gave the group a form of its own: the musicians performed in suits, like a chamber ensemble, and played fugues and pieces in Baroque form alongside blues and bebop. He wrote Django in 1954 in memory of Django Reinhardt. Lewis was one of the most important figures of the third stream and also wrote film music, for instance for Odds Against Tomorrow.
