Milt Jackson

Vibrafonist Milt Jackson uit Detroit werd in 1945 door Dizzy Gillespie naar New York gehaald en speelde in diens band en sextet. Hij maakte de vibrafoon tot een bebopinstrument. Door de draaiende schijfjes in de klankbuizen langzamer te zetten, kreeg zijn vibrafoon een warme, zangerige trilling. Zijn bijnaam was 'Bags'. Van 1952 tot 1974, en opnieuw vanaf 1981, speelde hij in het Modern Jazz Quartet. Daar bracht hij blues en swing in tegenover de strenge vormen van John Lewis. Daarnaast nam hij veel platen op met anderen, zoals Bags' Groove met Miles Davis en Bags & Trane met John Coltrane.
