Where?

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Where? is the debut album of bassist Ron Carter, recorded in 1961 at Van Gelder Studio and released on the label New Jazz. Some reissues appear under the name of Eric Dolphy, who plays bass clarinet, alto saxophone and flute on it. Besides the bass, Carter also plays the cello. We also hear Mal Waldron, George Duvivier and Charlie Persip.

Carter and Dolphy had already played together in Chico Hamilton's group. According to AllMusic, Where? is closer to Hamilton's chamber jazz than to Dolphy's adventurous 1960 record Out There. The reviewer found Carter's playing somewhat polite and monotonous and Dolphy the more interesting player.

Listening

Listening tip. In Softly, as in a Morning Sunrise, listen to Eric Dolphy's alto saxophone and notice how he handles the familiar melody.
