Jazz rap
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Jazz rap · From the very beginning, hip hop producers used samples: short pieces of existing records that are repeated as the basis for a track. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, groups in New York began deliberately sampling jazz records. A Tribe Called Quest built The Low End Theory (1991) on jazz samples and had the bassist Ron Carter play on it. Gang Starr, with the rapper Guru and the producer DJ Premier, made Jazz Thing in 1990 for the film Mo' Better Blues. In 1993 Guru recorded Jazzmatazz, with jazz musicians such as Donald Byrd and Roy Ayers in the studio. The British group Us3 gained access to the Blue Note archive and scored with Cantaloop, built on Herbie Hancock's Cantaloupe Island. In this way a new generation got to know jazz through hip hop.
