New jazz from Los Angeles
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
New jazz from Los Angeles · Around 2010 a scene grew up in Los Angeles in which jazz, hip hop and electronic music blend into one another. The producer Flying Lotus, a great-nephew of Alice Coltrane, founded the label Brainfeeder in 2008. The bassist Thundercat, the saxophonist Kamasi Washington and other musicians who already knew each other from school played as the collective The West Coast Get Down. Many of them played on Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly (2015). In the same year Washington released The Epic, an album of nearly three hours with big band, choir and strings, which referred to the spiritual jazz of the 1960s. Thundercat combines virtuoso bass playing with singing and humour. In this way jazz in Los Angeles found a new, young audience through hip hop.
