Kamasi Washington

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Tenor saxophonist Kamasi Washington grew up in Los Angeles, where his father was a saxophonist and music teacher. As a teenager he played with Thundercat and Ronald Bruner Jr. in a group that was later called The West Coast Get Down. He played with Snoop Dogg and Lauryn Hill, and played and arranged on Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly. In 2015 he released The Epic on Brainfeeder, an album of nearly three hours with big band, choir and strings. John Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders are his clear models. Washington brought a new, young audience to jazz.
