Heaven and Earth
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Heaven and Earth is saxophonist Kamasi Washington's fourth album and the follow-up to his triple album The Epic. It was released on 22 June 2018 and lasts almost two and a half hours. It consists of two CDs: Earth deals with earthly matters, Heaven with utopian thinking. There is also a hidden extra disc, The Choice, in a sealed section of the packaging. The sound does not differ much between the two discs. It is jazz with a large orchestra and choir, played by a band of Los Angeles musicians who have been playing together for years.
Critics called it more focused than The Epic, with less wandering and many colourful contrasts. The Guardian made it album of the week and Pitchfork gave it Best New Music. Some felt that his playing as a soloist remains limited, but his strength as a composer and arranger is widely praised.
