Thundercat
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Stephen Bruner, better known as Thundercat, grew up in Los Angeles in a musical family; his brother Ronald Bruner Jr. is a drummer. As a teenager he played in the punk band Suicidal Tendencies. He plays a six-string bass guitar and names Jaco Pastorius as a major influence. He worked closely with the producer Flying Lotus and played on Kendrick Lamar's To Pimp a Butterfly, for which he received a Grammy. On his own albums such as Drunk (2017), he sings funny and melancholy songs in a high voice over virtuosic bass lines. For It Is What It Is (2020) he received a Grammy.
