Drunk

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Thundercat released Drunk on 24 February 2017 on Brainfeeder, almost four years after his previous studio album Apocalypse. The album contains dozens of short tracks and a string of guests, including Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald, Kendrick Lamar, Wiz Khalifa, Mac Miller, Pharrell and Kamasi Washington. The style is broad: funk, hip hop, jazz, pop, psychedelia, R&B, soft rock and soul. One reviewer heard the record switch suddenly between Cool Jazz, prog fusion and smooth soul.

The lyrics are often about drink, drugs and partying, but also about loss and death. In Bus in These Streets the subject is too much smartphone use. A Fan's Mail (Tron Song Suite II) is partly named after his cat Tron, and the chorus consists of meowing sounds. Show You the Way, with McDonald and Loggins, was described as yacht rock. Them Changes uses a beat from a song by the Isley Brothers. The reviews were positive.
