Alice Coltrane
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Alice Coltrane · Alice McLeod grew up in Detroit, played organ in church and in 1959 studied in Paris with Bud Powell. In 1965 she married John Coltrane and replaced McCoy Tyner as the pianist in his group. After Coltrane's death in 1967 she made her own albums for Impulse!, on which she played harp, piano and organ. Journey in Satchidananda (1971), with Pharoah Sanders, shows influences from Indian music, with a tanpura drone and long modal lines. She became a follower of an Indian guru and in 1983 founded an ashram in California, where she recorded devotional music. Her great-nephew is Flying Lotus.
