Ptah, the El Daoud

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Ptah, the El Daoud is the third solo album by pianist and harpist Alice Coltrane, released by Impulse! Records in September 1970. She recorded it on 26 January 1970 in the basement of her home in Dix Hills, New York. For the first time, wind players had a larger role: Pharoah Sanders and Joe Henderson play tenor saxophone on two pieces and alto flute on Blue Nile, on which she herself moves from piano to harp. Sanders is consistently heard on the right, Henderson on the left.

All the music is by her. Ptah is the Egyptian god and El Daoud means the beloved in Arabic. AllMusic calls the record a truly great album, and Pitchfork counts Turiya and Ramakrishna among her best piano playing on record. JazzIz places the album among the five essential records of 1970.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Ptah, the El Daoud and notice how the two saxophonists come from different sides, Sanders on the right and Henderson on the left.
