Huntington Ashram Monastery
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Huntington Ashram Monastery is Alice Coltrane's second solo album. She recorded it in May 1969 in the studio in her home in Dix Hills, New York. It was released that year on John Coltrane Records, which was later absorbed into Impulse! Records. She plays harp and piano, together with bassist Ron Carter and drummer Rashied Ali.
The first three pieces are for harp, the last three for piano. AllMusic hears a meditative atmosphere in the harp pieces and more free jazz in the piano pieces. According to All About Jazz, the harp pieces hover between calm and searching, with Carter's repeating, throbbing bass as the pivot. The author Max Brzezinski praises Turiya, which lets the listener float in a cloud of rich sounds and plays endless variations on a theme.
