Journey in Satchidananda
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Journey in Satchidananda · The first four tracks were recorded in November 1970 in the studio that Alice Coltrane had at home in Dix Hills, New York. Isis and Osiris is a live recording from the Village Gate in Greenwich Village, from July of that year. Alongside her on harp and piano, the players included saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, bassist Cecil McBee and drummer Rashied Ali. The album forms a transition to her later, more personal work. The title and title track refer to Swami Satchidananda, with whom she had studied.
The tracks carry meaning. Shiva-Loka is the realm of Shiva, Stopover Bombay refers to a trip to India and Sri Lanka, and Something About John Coltrane builds on themes by her late husband. Isis and Osiris shows her interest in Middle Eastern and North African music. The tanpura brings Indian classical music into the sound. The album was praised by many critics. In 2020 Rolling Stone placed it at number 446 among the greatest albums.
