Indian classical music
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Indian classical music · The classical music of North India is built on the raga, a scale with fixed melodic turns and a character of its own, and the tala, a rhythmic cycle. A performance often begins slowly and freely, above a sustained fundamental note, the drone, and then speeds up together with the tabla. In the 1960s the sitar player Ravi Shankar brought this music to the West: he taught George Harrison and played at the festivals of Monterey (1967) and Woodstock (1969).
Listening
Listening tip. In the alap of Raga Malkauns, listen to how the sitar begins freely and without a fixed beat above the sustained drone: the raga is built up note by note.
