Ravi Shankar

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Ravi Shankar, from Varanasi, toured as a boy with the dance company of his brother Uday and then studied the sitar for years with Allauddin Khan. He wrote the music for Satyajit Ray's Apu Trilogy and brought the Indian raga to the West, together with the violinist Yehudi Menuhin and later with George Harrison. His performance at the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 made the sitar famous with a rock audience.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Raga Bhimpalasi in Monterey: the sitar begins alone and slowly, and only later does the tabla come in and the tempo pick up.
