Raga rock
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Raga rock · In the mid-1960s, Western bands began to use Indian instruments and scales: raga rock. George Harrison played sitar on Norwegian Wood (1965) by The Beatles and later took lessons from Ravi Shankar; The Byrds and The Rolling Stones, with Paint It Black (1966), also used the sound. Long drones and modal melodies became a hallmark of psychedelic rock.
Listening
Listening tip. In Norwegian Wood, hear how the sitar follows the melody of the acoustic guitar.
