Parallel cinema (Bengal)

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

Parallel cinema (Bengal) · In Kolkata in 1955, Satyajit Ray made Pather Panchali, influenced by Italian neorealism. It was the beginning of parallel cinema: films without the songs and stars of Bombay. For the Apu trilogy, the sitar player Ravi Shankar wrote music based on ragas. Vilayat Khan (Jalsaghar, 1958) and Ali Akbar Khan (Devi, 1960) also worked for Ray. From Teen Kanya (1961) Ray wrote his film music himself, including for Charulata (1964). He knew Western classical music well and combined it with Bengali folk music and songs by Rabindranath Tagore. The music is sparing and leaves plenty of room for silence and natural sound.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the sitar and the raga melody that builds slowly, and the silences between the music.
