Satyajit Ray
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Satyajit Ray (1921–1992) from Kolkata is best known as a film director. For his first films he worked with musicians from Indian classical music: Ravi Shankar, Vilayat Khan and Ali Akbar Khan. Ray noticed that their first loyalty lay with the musical tradition and not with his film. From Teen Kanya (1961) onwards he therefore wrote his film music himself. He was a connoisseur of Western classical music, and Beethoven was his favourite composer. He wanted to use Western forms mainly in films set in the city. In this way he wrote the music for Charulata (1964) and Aranyer Din Ratri (1970). For the fairy-tale film Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne (1969) he also wrote the songs.
