Zakir Hussain
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Zakir Hussain learned tabla from his father Alla Rakha, Ravi Shankar's regular accompanist. He played with the great soloists of Indian classical music, but also sought out other music: in 1975 the first album of Shakti appeared, his group with the guitarist John McLaughlin. Planet Drum, which he made with Mickey Hart, won the first Grammy for world music in 1992. His tabla sounded like a conversation with the soloist.
Listening
Listening tip. Listen to Lotus Feet by Shakti: here the tabla does not play a strict rhythm, but soft, plucking patterns beneath the guitar and violin.
