Vedic chant

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

Vedic chant · Around 1500 BCE, the hymns of the Rigveda arose in the north-west of India, in the region of the Punjab. Brahmins learned them by heart with clever methods of practice, in which they repeated the words in constantly different orders. In this way, text and pitch remained virtually unchanged for well over three thousand years, without being written down. The Samaveda sets the hymns to melodies and is regarded as a root of Indian music.

Listening

Listening tip. In this recitation of the Rigveda, hear how the voice stays on a few pitches, with small rises and falls that belong to the text. Then compare it with the Samaveda, where the text is truly sung.
