Carnatic music
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Carnatic music · The classical music of South India took shape in the sixteenth century in Vijayanagara, present-day Hampi, where Purandara Dasa wrote the exercises with which students still begin today. As in the north, everything revolves around raga, a scale with fixed turns, and tala, a rhythmic cycle, but here the composed song, the kriti, is central. Around 1800 Tyagaraja, Dikshitar and Syama Sastri wrote the classics of the repertoire. Violin and mridangam, a double-headed drum, accompany the voice.
