Tyagaraja
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Tyagaraja was a composer and singer from Tamil Nadu who devoted his life to the worship of the god Rama. About 720 of his kritis survive, songs mostly in Telugu in which text, raga and rhythm together form a prayer. His five Pancharatna kritis are sung together by musicians every year in Thiruvaiyaru, where he is buried. Almost every Carnatic concert still includes a song by him.
Listening
Listening tip. Listen to Jagadanandakaraka, the first Pancharatna kriti, sung by M. Balamuralikrishna: hear how the singer repeats a line and adds something to it with each repetition.
