Tansen
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Tansen was born in Gwalior and was a master of dhrupad, the oldest form of North Indian classical singing. After years at the court of Rewa, Emperor Akbar brought him to his own court in 1562, where he became one of the nine jewels. Ragas such as Miyan ki Todi and Miyan ki Malhar bear his name. According to legend he could summon rain, but little is certain about his life, and his year of birth, around 1500, is approximate.
Listening
Listening tip. No recordings of Tansen exist. Listen to the dhrupad tradition that he shaped: the Dagar singers begin with a long alap without rhythm, in which the raga is built up note by note.
