Bhangra
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Bhangra is originally a harvest dance from the Punjab, with the deep strokes of the dhol, a large drum. In the 1980s British-Asian bands in Birmingham and London turned it into modern dance music, with synthesizers and drum machines. Panjabi MC combined bhangra with hip hop: Mundian To Bach Ke became a hit across Europe in 2002.
Listening
Listening tip. In Mundian To Bach Ke, hear the dhol rhythms and the Punjabi vocals above a hip hop beat with the bass line from Knight Rider.
