Bismillah Khan
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Bismillah Khan turned the shehnai, an oboe-like instrument heard mainly at weddings and temples, into an instrument for the classical concert platform. He was born in Dumraon, grew up in Varanasi and practised on the banks of the Ganges. On 15 August 1947 he played at the Red Fort in Delhi as the Indian flag was raised. In 2001 he received the Bharat Ratna, India's highest honour.
Listening
Listening tip. Listen to Raga Todi and hear how the shehnai glides from note to note, almost like a singing voice.
