Lord of Lords

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Lord of Lords is Alice Coltrane's seventh solo album. She recorded it in July 1972 in California and it was released in 1973 on Impulse!, her last album for that label. She plays piano, organ, harp, timpani and percussion, with bassist Charlie Haden, drummer Ben Riley and a string orchestra that she conducts herself. It is the third album in a series with strings, after Universal Consciousness and World Galaxy.

It contains three of her own pieces, excerpts from Stravinsky's The Firebird and Going Home, an arrangement of Dvořák's Ninth Symphony. Producer Ed Michel recounted that she had the strings play in ways that they themselves did not think possible. Critics praised the drone, the space and the spiritual charge: Pitchfork called it perhaps her most ecstatic record.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Excerpt from the Firebird and notice how strings and organ together give Stravinsky's music a new colour.
